问:让我们来讨论一下教育不公平这一全球性问题。在中国,房价高昂的学区房被当做进入顶尖公立学校的门票。人们会认为这是一种富人的权益。您对这种现象是如何看待的?
 
答:The problem of education inequality between rich and poor is a global issue. In China, specific programs that perpetuate the gap are the Hukou and Gaokao. It is clear the only populations that gain from this system, by gaining admission to the top schools in the country, are students with residency in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
 
教育不公平是全球性的问题。在中国,户口制度和高考维持着教育不公平。在这种制度下,受益的显然是那些住在大城市的学生,比如有北京和上海户口的学生,他们有更多的机会去顶尖大学。
 
 
 
问:您认为有什么措施可以改变这一现状?
 
答:1) Invest in technology. We have the opportunity to efficiently engage all communities through the internet.
2) Invest in skills training and development. Instead of singularly valuing programs that cultivate doctors, lawyers, or business men, we also need to value programs that train construction workers and plumbers.
3) Incentivize teachers to teach in the lower earning provinces. By incentivizing more qualified teachers to teach in underachieving areas, we can improve the chances for students in these areas.
 
一是投资发展科技。我们可以通过互联网把所有的社区高效的联系在一起。
二是发展技能培训。我们不能仅仅重视医生,律师和商人的培养,我们也需要重视建筑工人和水管工的培养。
 
三是激励教师去贫困地区教学。通过激励更多的教师去贫困地区教学,可以提高学生考入大学的几率。
 
 
问:美国大学的录取规则是怎样的呢?
 
答:In the US, the SAT and ACT are only one components colleges consider in the applications. If they do! There is a push by schools to go test optional; for example, Wake Forest admits student who do not submit a test score. This is recognition of the fact the students are the totality of a variety of factors beyond how they perform for a few hours one day.
 
在美国申请大学,SAT或ACT成绩只是众多参考因素中的一个,有些学校,比如维克森林大学,没有要求必须提供考试成绩,学校也会录取没有提交SAT或ACT成绩的学生。也就是说,录取是对学生各方面素质和能力的综合考虑,而不是仅仅以几个小时的考试成绩作为评判标准。
 
   
问:美国名校究竟想要什么样的学生?
 
答: They are looking for someone who could do the work in the classroom required by professors as well as add value to the community that they have been invited to, not only the intellectual and academic value, but also the social and community value.
 
美国大学寻找的是既可以坐在教室中按照教授要求学习,也可以为所在的社区贡献力量的人,不仅注重个人的学术才能,而且看重学生对社会和社区的价值。
